Abstract
Novel compositions and methods of reducing microbial resistance to antimicrobial agents and treating infections are disclosed. In particular, compositions and methods of inhibiting efflux pump activity, treating infection and methods of enhancing antimicrobial activity of antimicrobial agents are provided.

A method of inhibiting efflux pump activity in a microorganism, comprising contacting said microorganism with an effective amount of an efflux-pump inhibitor, wherein said efflux-pump inhibitor is a β-lactam compound.

A method of treating infection caused by a microorganism in a subject, comprising administering to the subject in need thereof, a therapeutically effective amount of an efflux-pump inhibitor in combination with at least one antimicrobial agent, wherein said efflux-pump inhibitor is a β-lactam compound.
A method for prophylactic treatment of a subject, comprising administering to a subject at risk of infection caused by microorganism, a prophylactically effective amount of an efflux-pump inhibitor, wherein said efflux-pump inhibitor is a β-lactam compound.
A method for prophylactic treatment of a subject, comprising administering to a subject at risk of infection by microorganism, a prophylactically effective amount of an efflux-pump inhibitor in combination with at least one antimicrobial agent, wherein said efflux-pump inhibitor is a β-lactam compound.
