## Abstract

The invention relates to pet food compositions designed to induce the animal to cease feeding upon consumption of the appropriate nutritional amount. The invention further provides methods of inducing satiety response in animals and methods of controlling the amount of food intake in animals.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A pet food composition comprising a satiety inducing agent in an amount effective to induce a satiety response, wherein the satiety inducing agent is effective to modulate expression of one or more genes selected from NPY, NPY receptors, leptin and leptin receptors and wherein the satiety inducing agent is selected from beta-carotene, tomato powder and resveratrol.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The pet food composition of claim 1, wherein the beta-carotene is in an amount of 1.8 mg to 270 mg.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1, 2)

The pet food composition of claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the tomato powder is in an amount of 30 mg to 4500 mg.

### Claim 4

The pet food composition of any preceding claim, wherein the resveratrol is in an amount of 3 mg to 450 mg.

### Claim 5

The pet food composition of any preceding claim, wherein the animal is a cat.

### Claim 6

The pet food composition of any preceding claim further comprising:
0-90% by weight carbohydrate;
5-70% by weight protein;
2-50% by weight fat;
0.1-20% by weight total dietary fiber; and
0-15% by weight vitamins and minerals.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)

A method of inducing a satiety response comprising feeding the animal an effective amount of the pet food composition of any one of claims 1-6.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, wherein the beta-carotene is in an amount of 1.8 mg to 270 mg.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7, 8)

The method of claim 7 or claim 8, wherein the tomato powder is in an amount of 30 mg to 4500 mg.

### Claim 10 (depends on 7, 8, 9)

The method of any one of claims 7-9, wherein the resveratrol is in an amount of 3 mg to 450 mg.

### Claim 11 (depends on 7, 8, 9, 10)

The method of any one of claims 7-10, wherein the animal is a cat.

### Claim 12 (depends on 7, 8, 9, 10, 11)

The method of any one of claims 7-11, wherein the pet food composition further comprises:
0-90% by weight carbohydrate;
5-70% by weight protein;
2-50% by weight fat;
0.1-20% by weight total dietary fiber, and
0-15% by weight vitamins and minerals.

### Claim 13 (depends on 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12)

The method of any one of claims 7-12 wherein the pet food composition is formulated to deliver the nutritional requirements of an animal in the size and age class appropriate to the animal.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)

A method of controlling the amount of food intake of an animal comprising feeding the animal a pet food composition of any one of claims 1-6 wherein the satiety inducing agents are present such that the animal stops feeding when the appropriate nutritional content is consumed.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14, wherein the beta-carotene is in an amount of 1.8 mg to 270 mg.

### Claim 16 (depends on 14, 15)

The method of claim 14 or claim 15, wherein the tomato powder is in an amount of 30 mg to 4500 mg.

### Claim 17 (depends on 14, 15, 16)

The method of any one of claims 14-16, wherein the resveratrol is in an amount of 3 mg to 450 mg.

### Claim 18 (depends on 14, 15, 16, 17)

The method of any one of claims 14-17, wherein the animal is a cat.

### Claim 19 (depends on 14, 15, 16, 17, 18)

The method of any one of claims 14-18, wherein the pet food composition further comprises:
0-90% by weight carbohydrate;
5-70% by weight protein;
2-50% by weight fat;
0.1-20% by weight total dietary fiber; and
0-15% by weight vitamins and minerals.

### Claim 20 (depends on 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19)

The method of any one of claims 14-19 wherein the pet food composition is formulated to deliver the nutritional requirements of an animal in the size and age class appropriate to the animal.

### Claim 21

Use of an agent selected from beta-carotene, tomato powder and resveratrol, and combinations thereof, to control the amount of food intake of an animal.
