The cell population are derived from adult stem/progenitor cells which are characterised by being positive or negative to the Thy1.1 cell marker. ## Claims ### Claim 1 An isolated cell population originating from adult tissue, wherein said cells are capable of growth in a matrigel free culture system in the presence of serum; characterised in that the cells are Pdx-1 positive. ### Claim 2 (depends on 1) An isolated cell population according to claim 1 wherein said cells are Nestin negative. ### Claim 3 (depends on 1) An isolated cell population according to claim 1 wherein said cells are Nestin positive. ### Claim 4 (depends on 1) An isolated cell population according to claim 1 wherein the adult tissue is pancreatic, bone marrow, heart, breast, liver or kidney tissue. ### Claim 5 (depends on 4) An isolated cell population according to claim 4 wherein the adult tissue is from human. ### Claim at position 6 6-7. (canceled) ### Claim 8 (depends on 1) An isolated cell population according to claim 1 wherein the cells are positive for the cell surface marker Thy 1.1. ### Claim 9 (depends on 1) An isolated cell population according to claim 1 wherein the cells are negative for the cell surface marker Thy1.1. ### Claim 10 (depends on 1) A pharmaceutical composition comprising an isolated cell population according to claim 1 and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. ### Claim 11 A method of isolating a bipotent stem cell population from adult mammalian tissue, said method comprising: culturing said adult mammalian tissue; isolating emergent cell population monolayer; and further isolating those cells which are positive for the cell surface marker Thy 1.1 thereby providing a bipotent stem cell population. ### Claim 12 (depends on 11) A method according to claim 11 wherein said isolated cells are also positive for one or more cell surface markers selected from the group consisting of CD 147, CD44, CD49F, C-Met and Nestin. ### Claim at position 12 13-17. (canceled) ### Claim 18 A method of isolating a bipotent stem cell population, said method comprising obtaining a population of cells as deposited under accession number Q6203 at ECACC on 12 May 2005; and isolating a sub-population of cells which are positive for the cell surface marker Thy 1.1. ### Claim 19 (depends on 11) An adult cell population obtainable by a method according to claim 11. ### Claim 20 (depends on 1) A method of treating a disease state associated with cell degeneration or age related tissue change, said method comprising the steps of administering a cell population according to claim 1 to a patient having said disease. ### Claim 21 (depends on 20) A method according to claim 20 wherein the cells are administered intravenously to said patient, or are transplanted to the disease site or site of age related degeneration. ### Claim 22 (canceled) ### Claim 23 (depends on 20) A method according to claim 20 wherein the disease is associated with degeneration of pancreatic cells, neuronal cells, cardiovascular cells, epithelial cells, liver cells, muscle cells, retinal cells, hair follicle or kidney cells. ### Claim 24 (depends on 23) A method according to claim 23 wherein the disease is diabetes (Type I or II), Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, kidney disease, eye disease, liver disease or cardiovascular disease. ### Claim at position 20 25-26. (canceled) ### Claim 27 (depends on 9) A method of isolating an adult stem cell population according to claim 9 from adult mammalian tissue, said method comprising culturing said adult mammalian tissue; isolating emergent cell population monolayer; and further isolating those cells which are negative for the cell surface marker Thy 1.1. ### Claim 28 (depends on 27) A method according to claim 27 wherein said isolated cells are positive for one or more cell surface markers selected from the group consisting of CD 147, CD49f, CD44, CK19, C-Met and Nestin. ### Claim at position 23 29-36.
