## Abstract

A display device includes: a panel portion, on which a plurality of sub-pixels with a discrete bus line form each individual pixel, the plurality of sub-pixels that form the individual pixel being sequentially arranged in a horizontal and a vertical direction, the panel portion displaying a two-dimensional image or a three-dimensional image by application of a signal via the bus line; and a filter portion, provided on a front surface of the panel portion, that alternately changes, for each of predetermined horizontal regions, a polarization state of light passing through the panel portion. A boundary of each of the horizontal regions of the filter portion is positioned within a range of a first sub-pixel of each of the plurality of sub-pixels. The first sub-pixel displays a different image when the two-dimensional image is displayed on the panel portion to when the three-dimensional image is displayed on the panel portion.

## Claims

### Claim 1

(canceled)

### Claim 2

A display device capable of displaying a two-dimensional image and a three-dimensional image, comprising:
an image display portion on which a plurality of pixels are arranged in the horizontal and the vertical directions; and
a video signal control portion which controls the display of each of the pixels arranged on the image display portion;
wherein each of the pixels includes at least two sub-pixels, and the video signal control portion controls the sub-pixels to be one of (i) displayed in black when a three-dimensional image is displayed, and (ii) not supplied with a display signal when a three dimensional image is displayed.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The display device according to claim 2, wherein a three-dimensional image is displayed in the form of a plurality of lines and the video signal control portion controls pixels of odd numbered lines to be displayed for a right-eye image and controls pixels of even numbered lines to be displayed for a left-eye image.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The display device according to claim 2, wherein a three-dimensional image is displayed in the form of a plurality of lines and the video signal control portion controls pixels of odd numbered lines to be displayed for a left-eye image and controls pixels of even numbered lines to be displayed for a right-eye image.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The display device according to claim 4, wherein the display device further comprises a polarization control filter which has first polarization regions and second polarization regions, and wherein the sub-pixels are located at boundaries between the first regions and the second regions.

### Claim 6 (depends on 3)

The display device according to claim 3, wherein the display device further comprises a polarization control filter which has first polarization regions and second polarization regions, and wherein the sub-pixels are located at boundaries between the first regions and the second regions.

### Claim 7 (depends on 2)

The display device according to claim 2, wherein the video signal control portion uses first parameters relating to picture quality when the image display portion displays a two-dimensional image and uses second parameters relating to picture quality, differing from the first parameters, when the image display portion displays a three-dimensional image.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The display device according to claim 7, wherein both the first parameters and the second parameters comprise parameters for at least one of gamma correction, accurate color capture processing and overdrive controlling.

### Claim 9 (depends on 2)

The display device according to claim 2, wherein the image display portion comprises a liquid crystal panel.

### Claim 10 (depends on 2)

The display device according to claim 2, wherein the image display portion comprises an organic EL panel.

### Claim 11

A display method for displaying a two-dimensional image and a three-dimensional image, comprising:
controlling display of a plurality of pixels on an image display such that the plurality of pixels are arranged in the horizontal and the vertical directions, each of the pixels including at least two sub-pixels; and
controlling the sub-pixels to be one of (i) displayed in black when a three-dimensional image is displayed, and (ii) not supplied with a display signal when a three-dimensional image is displayed.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The display method according to claim 11, wherein a three-dimensional image is displayed in the form of a plurality of lines, and controlling the display comprises controlling pixels of odd numbered lines to be displayed for a right-eye image and controlling pixels of even numbered lines to be displayed for a left-eye image.

### Claim 13 (depends on 11)

The display method according to claim 11, wherein a three-dimensional image is displayed in the form of a plurality of lines, and controlling the display comprises controlling pixels of odd numbered lines to be displayed for a left-eye image and controlling pixels of even numbered lines to be displayed for a right-eye image.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The display method according to claim 13, wherein controlling the display further comprises filtering the pixels using a polarization control filter which has first polarization regions and second polarization regions, and wherein the sub-pixels are located at boundaries between the first regions and the second regions.

### Claim 15 (depends on 12)

The display method according to claim 12, wherein controlling the display further comprises filtering the pixels using a polarization control filter which has first polarization regions and second polarization regions, and wherein the sub-pixels are located at boundaries between the first regions and the second regions.

### Claim 16 (depends on 11)
