Abstract
Systems, methods, and articles for providing an antimicrobial composition to the proximal elements of a trans-dermal catheter and into the lumen of the transdermal catheter are disclosed. In an embodiment, an antimicrobial composition on surface a cap element transfers antimicrobial to the proximal end of the transdermal catheter. The system comprises an elongate member configured for insertion into a lumen of a catheter, the elongate member containing an antimicrobial.

A device for insertion into the hub of a transdermal catheter to provide antimicrobial properties, the device comprising:
- a) a cap configured to be removably secured to the proximal end of a transdermal catheter, the cap comprising:
- i) an outer surface for handling the device, and
- ii) an inner volume having an interior surface, the interior surface containing threads configured to engage the threads on the transdermal catheter;
- b) a tapered member positioned at least partially within the inner volume of the cap, such that the tapered member is located opposite the threads of the cap;
- and
- c) an elongate member secured to the tapered member and configured for insertion into the hub of the transdermal catheter, the elongate member comprising an antimicrobial agent;
- wherein the tapered member and elongate member are configured for insertion into the proximal end of the transdermal catheter such that antimicrobial agent from the elongate member is delivered into the hub of the transdermal catheter.
A device for insertion into the hub of a transdermal catheter to provide antimicrobial properties, the device comprising:
- a) a cap configured to be removably secured to the proximal end of a transdermal catheter;
- b) a tapered member secured to the interior of the cap;
- and
- c) a substantially rigid elongate member secured to the tapered member and configured for insertion into the hub of the transdermal catheter, the elongate member comprising an antimicrobial agent;
- a cap configured to be removably secured to the proximal end of a transdermal catheter;
- an elongate member secured to the cap and configured for insertion into the hub of the transdermal catheter, the elongate member comprising an antimicrobial agent;
- wherein the elongate member is configured to be retained proximal to a clamp on the transdermal catheter, and the elongate member is removable from the hub by removal of the cap.
A device for insertion into the hub of a transdermal catheter to provide antimicrobial properties, the device comprising:
- a) a cap configured to be removably secured to the proximal end of a transdermal catheter, the cap comprising:
- i) an outer surface for handling the device, and
- ii) an inner volume having an interior surface, the interior surface containing threads configured to engage the threads on the transdermal catheter, the interior surface threads comprising an antimicrobial agent;
- b) a tapered member positioned at least partially within the inner volume of the cap such that the tapered member is located opposite the threads of the cap, the tapered member having a taper of at least 5 percent;
- and
- c) a substantially rigid elongate member secured to the tapered member and configured for insertion into the hub of the transdermal catheter, the elongate member comprising an antimicrobial agent, the elongate member having a length of less than 50 millimeters and a thickness of less than 3 millimeters;
- wherein the tapered member and elongate member are configured for insertion into the proximal end of the transdermal catheter such that antimicrobial agent from the elongate member is delivered into the hub of the transdermal catheter.
