Abstract
Biomass (e.g., plant biomass, animal biomass, and municipal waste biomass) is processed to produce useful products, such as fuels. For example, systems can use feedstock materials, such as cellulosic and/or lignocellulosic materials and/or starchy materials, to produce ethanol and/or butanol, e.g., by fermentation.
Claims70
A method comprising:
- saccharifying an irradiated cellulosic or lignocellulosic material,
- wherein the irradiated cellulosic or lignocellulosic material is produced by exposing cellulosic or lignocellulosic material to a plurality of electrons that have been accelerated by a DC accelerator, and
- wherein the exposure provides a radiation dose of greater than 10 Mrad to the cellulosic or lignocellulosic material.
A method of producing an alcohol, comprising:
- providing a cellulosic or lignocellulosic material;
- irradiating the cellulosic or lignocellulosic material by exposing the material to a plurality of electrons that have been accelerated by a DC accelerator, wherein the material is provided with a radiation dose of greater than 10 Mrad;
- saccharifying the cellulosic or lignocellulosic material to produce fermentable sugars;
- and
- fermenting the sugars to produce an alcohol.

A method of producing sugars, comprising:
- irradiating a cellulosic or lignocellulosic material by exposing the material to a plurality of electrons that have been accelerated by a DC accelerator, wherein the material is provided with a radiation dose of greater than 10 Mrad;
- and
- saccharifying the cellulosic or lignocellulosic material to produce sugars.
A method comprising:
- saccharifying an irradiated cellulosic or lignocellulosic material,
- wherein the irradiated cellulosic or lignocellulosic material is produced by exposing cellulosic or lignocellulosic material to a plurality of electrons that have been accelerated by a DC insulated core transformer (ICT) type system, and
- wherein the exposure provides a radiation dose of greater than 10 Mrad to the cellulosic or lignocellulosic material.
