A composite electrode active material comprising:
- a core capable of intercalating and deintercalating lithium;
- and
- a coating layer formed on at least a part of a surface of the core,
- wherein the coating layer comprises a porous carbonaceous material.

A method of preparing a composite electrode active material comprising:
- preparing a mixture by mixing a core capable of intercalating and deintercalating lithium and a porous carbonaceous material;
- and
- forming a coating layer comprising the porous carbonaceous material on at least a part of the surface of the core.
