Abstract
Some aspects of the present disclosure relate to a sensor design that exploits the different majority carriers (holes/electrons) in WO3 and Cr2O3 to build sensitivity and selectivity to NO at ppb levels, while discriminating against CO at concentrations a thousand-fold higher (ppm) and spread over a considerable range (0-20 ppm). Practical application of this sensor system for detecting NO in human breath is demonstrated.
Claims18
A sensor device for sensing NO, the sensor device comprising:
- a sensing element including:
- a first region consisting of WO3,
- a second region consisting of Cr2O3;
- wherein the first region is adjacent to and contacts the second region.

A sensor system for sensing NO in a gas sample, the system comprising:
- a sensor device having:
- a sensing element including:
- a first region consisting of WO3,
- a second region consisting of Cr2O3,
- wherein the first region is adjacent to and contacts the second region,
- a first electrode established within the first region,
- a second electrode established within the second region;
- and
- a database correlating measured resistance along wiring between the first and second electrodes with presence of NO in a gas sample interfacing with the sensing element.
