Abstract
A flow cell including inlet and outlet ports in fluid communication with each other through a flow channel that extends therebetween. The flow channel includes a diffuser region and a field region that is located downstream from the diffuser region. The field region of the flow channel directs fluid along reaction sites where desired reactions occur. The fluid flows through the diffuser region in a first flow direction and through the field region in a second flow direction. The first and second flow directions being substantially perpendicular.

A microdevice comprising:
- a flow cell including a substrate layer having a plurality of reaction sites and a flow cover mounted to the substrate layer, the flow cover including inlet and outlet ports that are in fluid communication with each other through a flow channel of the flow cell, the flow channel being defined between the flow cover and the substrate layer and including a diffuser region and a field region that is downstream from the diffuser region, the diffuser region shaped to distribute the fluid into the field region;
- and
- an activity detector affixed to the substrate layer of the flow cell and having circuitry for communicating data, the activity detector configured to detect activity from the reaction sites.
A method comprising:
- providing a microdevice comprising a flow cell and an activity detector coupled to the flow cell, the flow cell including a substrate layer having a plurality of reaction chambers and a flow cover mounted to the substrate layer, the flow cover including inlet and outlet ports that are in fluid communication with each other through a flow channel of the flow cell, the flow channel being defined between the flow cover and the substrate layer, the flow channel including a diffuser region that has a flow cross-section that increases in size to diffuse the fluid, the activity detector having circuitry for communicating data and configured to detect activity from the reaction chambers;
- flowing an aqueous solution that includes at least one of reagents and enzymes for DNA amplification through the flow channel;
- performing DNA amplification in the reaction chambers;
- and
- detecting activity within the reaction chambers.
