Abstract
The present invention is directed to methods for inhibiting growth of bacteria and to nanometer scale surfaces having antibacterial properties.
Claims15
A method of reducing growth of bacteria on a surface of a substrate comprising altering the surface of the substrate to produce a nanometer scale surface geometry by contacting the surface of the substrate with a solution of a nano-roughing agent to produce a nanometer scale surface geometry on the surface of the substrate, contacting the surface with bacteria and inhibiting growth of the bacteria.
A method of inhibiting growth of bacteria on the surface of a substrate comprising providing the surface of the substrate with a nanometer scale surface geometry, contacting the surface with bacteria, and inhibiting adherence of the bacteria to the surface.
A method of inhibiting growth of bacteria on the surface of a substrate comprising providing the surface of the substrate with a nanometer scale surface geometry, contacting the surface with bacteria, and inhibiting growth of the bacteria on the surface.
A method of reducing bacterial infection in an animal including a human comprising inserting into the animal a substrate having a surface with a nanometer scale surface geometry, contacting the surface with bacteria, and inhibiting growth of the bacteria on the surface.
A method of reducing bacterial infection associated with an endotracheal tube in an animal including a human comprising inserting into the animal the endotracheal tube having a surface with a nanometer scale surface geometry, contacting the surface with bacteria, and inhibiting growth of the bacteria on the surface.
An anti-bacterial substrate comprising a substrate and a substrate surface having a nanometer scale surface geometry sufficient to inhibit adherence of bacterial cells to the substrate surface.
