Abstract
A column used for gas chromatography (GC) is fabricated from an open tubular light guiding capillary. The light guiding capillary is suitable for transmission of optical frequencies employed in commercially available hand held laser range finders.

A method for determining the length of a chromatography column comprising:
- injecting a laser pulse into a first end of the chromatography column;
- receiving the laser pulse from a second end of the chromatography column at a second time;
- determining the time of travel from the first and the second time;
- and
- determining the column length from the time of travel, the speed and a correction factor;
- wherein the injecting and receiving the laser pulse is performed by a range finder.

- a light guiding capillary tube coated internally with a cross bonded stationary phase.
An adapter for a laser rangefinder, comprising:
- a tube having a first end and a second end;
- the first end mechanically coupling a gas chromatograph column;
- and
- the second end mechanically coupling the laser rangefinder;
- wherein the adapter facilitates measuring the length of an open tubular column used for gas chromatography.
