Abstract
An intramedullary fixation assembly for bone fusion includes a first member positioned at a proximal end of the intramedullary fixation assembly, and a second member positioned at a distal end of the intramedullary fixation assembly. The first member is slideably coupled to the second member and provides for an interference fit with the second member. The intramedullary fixation assembly includes an optional cannulated threaded screw member having a plurality of threads on an external surface of the threaded screw member.

1-28. (canceled)
A method for fusing the metatarsal phalangeal joint, comprising:
- providing a fixation assembly, wherein the fixation assembly further comprises:
- connecting a metatarsal implant member to a metatarsal bone;
- and
- connecting a phalangeal implant member to a phalange bone;
- forming the metatarsal medullary canal and forming the phalangeal medullary canal;
- inserting the metatarsal implant member into the metatarsal medullary canal;
- inserting the phalangeal implant member into the metatarsal implant member;
- inserting the phalangeal implant member into the phalangeal medullary canal;
- applying compression to the phalangeal implant member to provide an interference fit between the metatarsal implant member and the phalangeal implant member, thereby fusing the metatarsal phalangeal joint.
57-178. (canceled)
A method for metatarsal bone fusion in a foot, comprising the steps of:
- providing a proximal screw member, the proximal screw member comprising a head portion and a first shaft extending along a first longitudinal axis;
- and
- providing a distal member, the distal member comprising a second shaft extending along a second longitudinal axis and a bore extending through the second shaft along a bore axis;
- forming a first bore hole in one of a cuneiform bone, a navicular bone, or a talus bone and forming a canal in a metatarsal bone;
- inserting the distal member into the second bore hole;
- coupling the proximal screw member to the distal member;
- inserting the proximal screw member into the first bore hole;
- and
- applying torque to the head portion to lock the distal member to the proximal screw member, thereby compressing the metatarsal bone;
- wherein the second longitudinal axis and the bore axis define an angle,
- wherein the proximal screw member is adapted for coupling to the distal member at the angle, and
- wherein the proximal screw member is adapted for residing substantially within one of the cuneiform bone, the navicular bone, or the talus bone and the distal member is adapted for residing substantially within the metatarsal bone.
