-17. (canceled)
A method of lubricating an internal combustion engine comprising supplying to the internal combustion engine a lubricating composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity and a nitrile compound obtained by a process comprising:
- Step (1) reacting:
- (i) a carbonyl-containing compound, with
- (ii) a compound represented by the formula N≡C—CH2-T, wherein
- T is an electron withdrawing group selected from —C≡N, —CO2R1, —C(O)NR2R3 or —C(O)SR4;
- R1 is a hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 30, or 4 to 20 carbon atoms;
- R2 is a hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group, containing 1 to 30, or 4 to 20 carbon atoms;
- R3 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 30, or 4 to 20 carbon atoms;
- R4 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 30, or 4 to 20 carbon atoms;
- and
- Step (2) reacting the product of step (1) with a compound having an abstractable proton or with a hydrocarbyl halide.
