Method and apparatus for receiving messages under first and second network coverage

A tangible computer readable medium having recorded thereon instructions for execution by a mobile device, said instructions when executed causing the mobile device to execute a method comprising:

• while not handling traffic of a defined type over a first network, from time to time checking a second network to see if there are any messages;
• while handling traffic of the defined type over the first network, from time to time tuning away to the second network to see if there are any messages, the tuning away while handling traffic of the defined type over the first network taking place less frequently than the checking the second network while not handling traffic of the defined type over the first network.
