Abstract
Provided are methods of improving the wear resistance and aesthetic properties of dental articles though use of spherical microparticles, as well as dental articles having an abrasion resistant spherical microparticle/polymer coating thereon.
Claims20
A method for coating a medical article comprising:
- providing a dental article comprising a body;
- depositing a first hardenable dental composition on at least a portion of the surface of the body;
- wherein depositing the first hardenable dental composition forms a first polymeric layer having an initial thickness;
- depositing a plurality of spherical microparticles on at least a portion of the first polymeric layer, and wherein the plurality of spherical particles are at least partially embedded in the first polymeric layer;
- and
- depositing a second hardenable dental composition on a portion of the spherical particles, wherein depositing the second hardenable dental composition forms a second polymeric layer.

A dental article comprising:
- a crown having a height of contour;
- an abrasion resistant coating layer on at least a portion of the crown, the coating layer comprising:
- a first polymeric layer disposed on at least a portion of the outer surface of the crown, wherein the first polymeric layer comprises a first hardened composition including a first polymerizable component;
- a plurality of spherical microparticles embedded within the first polymeric layer;
- and
- at least one additional polymeric layer disposed on at least a portion of the spherical microparticles, wherein the at least one additional polymeric layer comprises at least one additional hardened composition including at least one additional polymerizable component.

A dental article comprising:
- a crown having a height of contour;
- a polymeric layer disposed on at least a portion of the outer surface of the crown, wherein the first polymer layer comprises a first hardened composition comprising a first hardenable component and a pigment, and wherein the first hardenable component comprises a flexible monomer or multi(meth)acrylate oligomer;
- a plurality of spherical microparticles embedded within the polymeric layer, wherein the plurality of spherical microparticles comprise an average diameter, and wherein the thickness of the polymeric layer is at least the average diameter of the microparticles.
A kit comprising:
- a crown;
- at least one hardenable dental composition comprising a hardenable component, an initator system, a pigment, and filler;
- a plurality of spherical microparticles;
- and
- at least one of a cement, a brush, and instructions for application of the spherical microparticle, and hardenable dental composition.
