A method of diagnosing or prognosing an abnormality of glucose metabolism in a subject, the method comprising detecting the level of expression of Inhibitor of Differentiation 1 (Id1), wherein an increased level of Id1 is diagnostic or prognostic of an abnormality of glucose metabolism in the subject.
