Printer with adaptive distortion control

A printer comprising:

• an inkjet printer having a printhead to print an inkjet image is printed on a receiver using a hydrophilic ink,
• an image capture system capturing an image of the inkjet image on the receiver after a predetermined period of absorption;
• a toner printer to generate and to transfer a toner image onto the receiver;
• control system that causes printing of the inkjet image, capture of the image of the ink jet image and that identifies local areas of the receiver that have reached a threshold level of non-uniform distortion and where additional ink remains for absorption and that generates a that provides toner particles for transfer onto the receiver in the identified areas in register with the inkjet print as non-uniformly distorted;
• and transferring the liquid management toner image onto the receiver and causing transfer the liquid management toner image onto the receiver;
• wherein the liquid management toner image reduces absorption of ink in the receiver in the identified areas control the extent of distortion in the area.
