## Abstract

Composite particulates, topical composition containing composite particulates, methods for improving the appearance of skin depth, dimensionality or undertones; a method for improving the ashy, chalky or mask-like appearance of color cosmetic compositions on the skin; and a method for reducing the number of shades in a color cosmetic shade range by formulating the cosmetic with composite particulates.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A composition for application to keratinous surfaces containing composite particulates in the form of fused agglomerates having a portion comprised of at least one colorant and a portion comprised of at least one clear or translucent thermoplastic material, wherein the composite particulates contain, by weight of the total composite particulate, from about 1 to 99.9 parts of the colorant portion and from about 0.1 to 100 parts of the clear or translucent thermoplastic material portion, and wherein at least some of the composite particulates present in the composition have a colorant portion present.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1 wherein the colorant is a pigment, powder, or mixture thereof.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The composition of claim 2 wherein the colorant is an organic pigment, an inorganic pigment, or mixtures thereof.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The composition of claim 3 wherein the organic pigment is a D&C color, FD&C color, or Lake thereof and the inorganic pigment is one or more iron oxides, titanium dioxide, or zinc oxide.

### Claim 5 (depends on 2)

The composition of claim 2 wherein the powder is a white or non-colored particulate material having a particle size ranging from about 0.001 to 100 microns.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1 wherein the thermoplastic material is in the form of partial solid or hollow spheres.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1 in the form of a foundation makeup, blush, mascara, eyeshadow. concealer, or lipstick.

### Claim 8

A composite particulate in the form of fused agglomerates having a portion comprised of at least one colorant and a portion comprised of at least one clear or translucent thermoplastic material, wherein the composite particulates contain, by weight of the total composite particulate, from about 1 to 99.9 parts of the colorant portion and from about 0.1 to 100 parts of the clear or translucent thermoplastic material portion, and wherein at least some of the thermoplastic material in the composite particulate is in the form of solid or hollow partial or complete spheres.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The particulate of claim 8 wherein the clear or translucent thermoplastic material originates from a clear or translucent hollow or solid spherical particulates derived from the polymerization of one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The particulate of claim 8 wherein the thermoplastic material is in the form of spherical particulates having an index of refraction ranging from 1.1 to 1.6 and when viewed in bulk form provide a whitish or grayish appearance.

### Claim 11 (depends on 8)

The particulate of claim 8 wherein the clear or translucent thermoplastic material used to make the particulate is in the form of hollow or solid spherical particulates comprising polymethylmethacrylate.

### Claim 12

A method for imparting color to keratinous surfaces while maintaining the appearance of dimensionality, depth, or undertones of the surface by application of a composition comprising composite particulates having a portion comprised of at least one colorant and a portion comprised of at least one clear or translucent thermoplastic material to the skin.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12 wherein the composite particulates contain, by weight of the total composite particulate, from about 1 to 99.9 parts of the colorant portion and from about 0.1 to 100 parts of the clear or translucent thermoplastic material portion, and wherein at least some of the thermoplastic material in the particulate is in the form of solid or hollow partial or complete spheres.
