## Abstract

The present invention relates inter alia to the use of a combination of a vaccine against Lawsonia intracellularis and an anti-Lawsonia antibiotic for the prevention or reduction of early, preferably fulminant Lawsonia intracellularis infections. The present invention relates particularly to the use of a live Lawsonia intracellularis vaccine in conjunction with an antibiotic that is effective against Lawsonia intracellularis, for the avoidance or reduction of early Lawsonia intracellularis infections in animals.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of reducing early Lawsonia intracellularis infections in piglets comprising administering a live Lawsonia intracellularis vaccine and an antibiotic that is effective against Lawsonia intracellularis, wherein said live Lawsonia intracellularis vaccine is administered within the first four weeks of life of said piglets and the antibiotic is administered over a period of 12 to 21 days starting at day 3 after the administration of said live Lawsonia intracellularis vaccine.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein said early infections is a fulminant infection.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein said Lawsonia intracellularis vaccine is administered within the first three weeks of life of said piglets.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein said antibiotic is administered at least until reliable immunity is detected.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The method according to claim 4, wherein the reliable immunity detection is determined by the detection of Lawsonia intracellularis-specific antibodies in the vaccinated piglets.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein said antibiotic is administered to the piglets starting on day 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 after the administration of said Lawsonia intracellularis vaccine.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, further comprising additionally administering said antibiotic before said Lawsonia intracellularis vaccine is administered.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The method according to claim 7, wherein said antibiotic is administered from 1 to 3 days before the administration of said Lawsonia intracellularis vaccine.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein said antibiotic is acetylisovaleryltylosin, lincospectin, tiamulin, tulathromycin (draxxin), tylo sin, valnemulin, or a combination thereof.

### Claim 10 (depends on 7)

The method according to claim 7, wherein said tylosin is administered in an amount of 10 to 50 mg/kg of body weight of piglets.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the reduction of the early Lawsonia intracellularis infections in the piglets results in an improved weight gain of the piglets as compared with unvaccinated piglets or piglets treated only with antibiotics.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The method according to claim 11, wherein said improved weight gain is at least 1 kg within 50 days of the vaccination.

### Claim 13

A method of reducing early Lawsonia intracellularis infections in piglets comprising administering a Lawsonia intracellularis vaccine and an antibiotic that is effective against Lawsonia intracellularis, wherein said Lawsonia intracellularis vaccine is administered within the first four weeks of life of said piglets and the antibiotic is administered to said piglets until Lawsonia intracellularis-specific antibodies are detected in the vaccinated piglets.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The method according to claim 13, wherein the early infections is a fulminant infection.

### Claim 15 (depends on 13)

The method according to claim 13, wherein said Lawsonia intracellularis vaccine is administered to said piglets before or on the day of weaning.

### Claim 16 (depends on 13)

The method according to claim 13, wherein said Lawsonia intracellularis vaccine is administered to the piglets between the day of birth and day 21 after birth.

### Claim 17 (depends on 13)

The method according to claim 13, wherein said antibiotic is administered over a period of 12 to 21 days after the administration of said Lawsonia intracellularis vaccine.

### Claim 18 (depends on 13)

The method according claim 13, wherein said antibiotic further comprises acetylisovaleryltylosin, lincospectin, tiamulin, tulathromycin (draxxin), tylo sin, valnemulin, or a combination thereof.

### Claim 19 (depends on 18)

The method according to claim 18, wherein the antibiotic is administered in an amount of 10 to 50 mg/kg of body weight of pigs.

### Claim 20 (depends on 13)

The method according to claim 13, wherein said Lawsonia intracellularis vaccine is a live attenuated vaccine, an inactivated killed vaccine or a subunit vaccine.

### Claim 21

A method of reducing Lawsonia intracellularis infections in piglets comprising administering a Lawsonia intracellularis vaccine and tylosin, wherein said Lawsonia intracellularis vaccine is administered within the first four weeks of life of said piglets and the antibiotic is administered over a period of 12 to 21 days after the administration of said Lawsonia intracellularis vaccine.

### Claim 22 (depends on 21)

The method according to claim 21, wherein said infections is a fulminant infection.

### Claim 23 (depends on 21)

The method according to claim 21, wherein said Lawsonia intracellularis vaccine is administered to the piglets before or on the day of weaning.

### Claim 24 (depends on 21)

The method according to claim 21, wherein said Lawsonia intracellularis vaccine is administered to the piglets between the day of birth and day 21 after birth.

### Claim 25 (depends on 21)

The method according to claim 21, wherein said antibiotic is acetylisovaleryltylosin, lincospectin, tiamulin, tulathromycin (draxxin), tylo sin, valnemulin, or a combination thereof.
