## Abstract

An electronic device may have a liquid crystal display with backlight structures. The backlight structures may produce backlight that passes through display layers in the display. The display layers may include color filter elements, a liquid crystal layer, and a thin-film transistor layer. The color filter elements may be interposed between the thin-film transistor layer and the backlight structures or the thin-film transistor layer may be interposed between the color filter elements and the backlight structures. The backlight structures may be formed from optical fiber, a two-dimensional array of light-emitting diodes, a light guide plate that includes a rectangular recess for receiving optical films, or light guide plate structures that include internal light scattering structures. A light guide plate may be provided with alignment features that mate with alignment features on optical films.

## Claims

### Claim 1

a layer of liquid crystal material between the outer display layer and the inner display layer, wherein the outer display layer comprises a substrate and comprises thin-film transistors, wherein the inner display layer is interposed between the layer of liquid crystal material and the two-dimensional light-emitting diode array.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The display defined in claim 1 wherein the inner display layer comprises a color filter array layer.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The display defined in claim 1 further comprising a layer of color filter elements on the substrate, wherein the thin-film transistors are interposed between the color filter elements and the substrate.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The display defined in claim 3 wherein the inner display layer comprises a polarizer layer.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The display defined in claim 1 wherein the two-dimensional array of light-emitting diodes comprises an array of vertically mounted light-emitting diodes mounted on a substrate in rows and columns.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The display defined in claim 1 wherein the array of light-emitting diodes comprises a two-dimensional array of organic light-emitting diodes.

### Claim 7

A display, comprising:
liquid crystal display layers; and
backlight structures that provide backlight for the liquid crystal display layers, wherein the backlight structures include at least one optical fiber.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The display defined in claim 7 wherein the optical fiber comprises a textured surface that is configured to promote light leakage.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The display defined in claim 8 wherein the backlight structures include a plurality of light-emitting diodes and a plurality of optical fibers including the at least one optical fiber and wherein each of the optical fibers is configured to receive light from a respective one of the light-emitting diodes.

### Claim 10 (depends on 7)

The display defined in claim 7 wherein the backlight structures comprise:
at least one light-emitting diode; and
a light diffusing and guiding structure interposed between the light-emitting diode and the optical fiber.

### Claim 11 (depends on 7)

The display defined in claim 7 further comprising:
a lower polarizer;
an upper polarizer; and
an opaque masking layer on a peripheral portion of the lower polarizer.

### Claim 12

A display, comprising:
liquid crystal display layers; and
backlight structures configured to produce backlight that passes through the liquid crystal display layers, wherein the backlight structures comprise a light source that produces light, a light guide plate that receives the light and that has a recess, and optical films in the recess and wherein at last some of the light produced by the light source passes through the light guide plate and the optical films and serves as the backlight that passes through the liquid crystal display layers.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The display defined in claim 12 wherein the optical films include a diffuser film and a brightness enhancing film.
