## Abstract

An end effector assembly for use with a surgical stapler, the end effector comprises a staple cartridge assembly having a tissue contacting surface and an anvil assembly having a tissue contacting surface. A surgical buttress configured and dimensioned to substantially overlie at least a portion of the tissue contacting surface of at least one of the staple cartridge assembly and anvil assembly. A plurality of attachment pads secured to at least one of the tissue contacting surface of the at least one staple cartridge assembly and anvil assembly configured to retain the respective buttress material thereto, wherein the surgical buttress is ultrasonically welded to each of the plurality of attachment pads.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An end effector assembly for use with a surgical stapler, the end effector comprising:
a staple cartridge assembly having a tissue contacting surface;
an anvil assembly having a tissue contacting surface;
a surgical buttress configured and dimensioned to substantially overlie at least a portion of the tissue contacting surface of at least one of the staple cartridge assembly and anvil assembly; and
a plurality of attachment pads secured to at least one of the tissue contacting surface of the at least one staple cartridge assembly and anvil assembly configured to retain the respective buttress material thereto,
wherein the surgical buttress is ultrasonically welded to each of the plurality of attachment pads.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The end effector assembly of claim 1, wherein at least one of the attachment pads is made from a material selected from the group comprising glycolide, trimethylene carbonate, lactide, caprolactone, and combinations thereof.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The end effector assembly of claim 2, wherein at least one of the attachment pads is placed into a recess of at least one of the tissue contacting surface of the staple cartridge assembly and anvil assembly.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The end effector assembly of claim 3, wherein the staple cartridge assembly and the anvil assembly have a central longitudinally extending slot configured to enable passage of a knife blade therethrough.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 4, wherein at least one attachment pad is positioned near the central longitudinally extending slot.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The end effector assembly of claim 5, wherein each of the staple cartridge assembly and anvil assembly have a distal end such that at least one distal attachment pad is positioned between a first outer edge of each of the staple cartridge assembly and anvil assembly and a distal end of the central longitudinally extending slot.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The end effector assembly of claim 6, wherein each of the staple cartridge assembly and anvil assembly have a proximal end such that at least one proximal attachment pad is positioned between a first outer edge of each of the staple cartridge assembly and anvil assembly and a proximal end of the central longitudinally extending slot.

### Claim 8 (depends on 3)

The end effector assembly of claim 3, wherein the staple cartridge assembly, the anvil assembly and the surgical buttress are substantially circular, wherein the circular buttress includes an inner portion, an outer portion, and a middle portion extending between the inner portion and the outer portion, and at least on attachment pad secured along the middle portion.

### Claim 9

A staple cartridge for use with a surgical stapling apparatus, the staple cartridge comprising:
a cartridge body including a tissue contacting surface defining a plurality of staple retaining slots;
a staple disposed within each staple retaining slot of the cartridge body;
a surgical buttress configured and dimensioned to substantially overlie at least a portion of the staple retaining slots of the cartridge body; and
a plurality of attachment pads secured to the tissue contacting surface of the cartridge body configured to retain the respective buttress material thereto,
wherein the surgical buttress is ultrasonically welded to each of the plurality of attachment pads.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The staple cartridge of claim 9, wherein at least one of the attachment pads is made from a material selected from the group comprising glycolide, trimethylene carbonate, lactide, caprolactone, and combinations thereof

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The staple cartridge of claim 10, wherein the cartridge body has a central longitudinally extending slot configured to enable passage of a knife blade therethrough.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The staple cartridge of claim 11, wherein at least one attachment pad of the cartridge body is positioned near the central longitudinally extending slot.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The staple cartridge of claim 12, wherein the staple cartridge has a distal end such that at least one distal attachment pad is positioned between a first outer edge of the staple cartridge and a distal end of the central longitudinally extending slot.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The staple cartridge of claim 13, wherein the staple cartridge has a proximal end such that at least one proximal attachment pad is positioned between a first outer edge of the staple cartridge and a proximal end of the central longitudinally extending slot.

### Claim 15 (depends on 10)

The staple cartridge of claim 10, wherein the staple cartridge and the surgical buttress are substantially circular, wherein the circular surgical buttress includes an inner portion, an outer portion, and a middle portion extending between the inner portion and the outer portion, and at least on attachment pad secured along the middle portion.

### Claim 16

A surgical stapling apparatus, comprising:
a housing;
an end effector being secured to the housing and a staple cartridge assembly having a tissue contacting surface and an anvil assembly having a tissue contacting surface;
a surgical buttress configured and dimensioned to substantially overlie at least a portion of the tissue contacting surface of at least one of the staple cartridge assembly and anvil assembly; and
a plurality of attachment pads secured to at least one of the tissue contacting surface of the at least one staple cartridge assembly and anvil assembly configured to retain the respective buttress material thereto,
