## Abstract

In a process for separating components in a feed stream by simulated countercurrent adsorptive separation, the process according to various aspects includes withdrawing an extract stream through one transfer line that contains residual fluid away from the adsorptive separation chamber. The process also includes directing an initial portion of the extract stream, including at least a portion of the residual fluid withdrawn through the one transfer line toward a first destination. The process further includes directing a subsequent portion of the extract stream withdrawn through the one transfer line toward a second destination.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A process for separating components in a feed stream by simulated countercurrent adsorptive separation comprising:
introducing a feed stream, comprising at least one preferentially adsorbed component and at least one non-preferentially adsorbed component, and a desorbent stream into two different ports via two different corresponding transfer lines along a multi-bed adsorptive separation chamber having a plurality of beds that are serially connected in fluid communication and comprising a predetermined number of spaced ports with corresponding transfer lines in fluid communication therewith for introducing and removing fluid into and from the adsorptive separation chamber and withdrawing an extract stream and raffinate stream through two different ports of the multi-bed adsorptive separation chamber via two different corresponding transfer lines;
withdrawing the extract stream through one transfer line that contains residual fluid away from the adsorptive separation chamber;
directing an initial portion of the extract stream, including at least a portion of the residual fluid withdrawn through the one transfer line toward a first destination; and
directing a subsequent portion of the extract stream withdrawn through the one transfer line toward a second destination.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The process of claim 1, wherein the second destination is the inlet of an extract fractionation column and the first destination is a destination other than an inlet of the extract fractionation column to restrict at least the portion of the residual fluid from entering the extract fractionation column and contaminating an extract product.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The process of claim 1, wherein the first destination is a recycle line for recycling the extract stream and the portion of the residual fluid to the adsorptive separation chamber.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The process of claim 1, further comprising flushing the one transfer line positioned between the feed stream transfer line and a previous extract stream transfer line prior to withdrawing the extract stream therethrough with a flushing fluid comprising the preferentially adsorbed component in a concentration higher than the concentration in the feed stream and the non-preferentially adsorbed component in a concentration lower than in the feed stream to displace residual feed from the one transfer line so that the residual fluid in the one transfer line when the extract stream is subsequently withdrawn therethrough comprises primarily the flushing fluid.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The process of claim 4, wherein the flushing fluid is withdrawn from a transfer line previously occupied by the extract stream and adjacent to a desorption zone defined as a region of the adsorptive separation chamber between the port where the desorbent stream is introduced into the adsorptive separation chamber and the port where the extract stream is withdrawn from the adsorptive separation chamber.

### Claim 6 (depends on 4)

The process of claim 4, wherein the feed stream, the desorbent stream, the extract stream, the raffinate stream, and the transfer line flush are sequentially shifted to subsequent ports and their corresponding transfer lines along the predetermined number of spaced ports and their corresponding transfer line so that the extract stream is withdrawn through the one transfer line after the one transfer line is flushed with the flushing fluid to reduce contamination of the extract stream that may otherwise occur from the non-preferentially adsorbed component remaining in the transfer line.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The process of claim 1, wherein the extract stream, including at least a portion of the residual fluid, withdrawn through the one transfer line is sent to a bottoms portion of a raffinate fractionation column as the first destination for recycling back to the adsorptive separation chamber so that the portion of the residual fluid is not introduced into an extract fractionation column inlet to contaminate the extract product produced therefrom.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The process of claim 1, wherein the extract stream, including at least a portion of the residual fluid flushed, withdrawn through the one transfer line is sent to a bottoms portion of an extract fractionation column as the first destination for recycling back to the adsorptive separation chamber so that the residual fluid is not introduced into an extract fractionation column inlet to contaminate the extract product produced therefrom.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The process of claim 1, further comprising moving a valve to a first position to direct the extract stream including the residual fluid toward the first destination via a first destination line and moving the valve to a second position to direct the extract stream toward the second destination via a second destination line.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The process of claim 1, wherein the extract stream is withdrawn through the one transfer line during a step-time interval and the extract stream, including at least a portion of the residual fluid, withdrawn through the one transfer line for between an initial about 20 and 40 percent of the step-time interval is directed to the first destination and the extract stream withdrawn through the one transfer line for between a subsequent about 60 and 80 percent of the step-time interval is directed to the second destination.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The process claim 1 wherein extract stream, including at least a portion of the residual fluid, is directed to the first destination for the first period of time sufficient to direct a volume of fluid of about 0.8 to about 1.5 of a volume of the transfer line and associated valving to the first destination.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The process of claim 1, further comprising monitoring the composition of the extract stream, including any residual fluid from the one transfer line therein, and directing the extract stream to the first destination when the extract stream includes more than a predetermined amount of a residual fluid component and directing the fluid to the second destination when the extract stream includes less than the predetermined amount of the residual fluid component.

### Claim 13

A process for the separation of components in a feed stream comprising at least one preferentially adsorbed component and at least one non-preferentially adsorbed component by simulated countercurrent adsorptive separation comprising:
introducing a feed stream into a port of a multi-bed adsorptive separation chamber comprising a plurality of ports with corresponding transfer lines via one transfer line in fluid communication with the port;
flushing residual feed from the one transfer line into the adsorptive separation chamber with a flushing fluid to fill the one transfer line with the flushing fluid;
withdrawing an extract stream from the adsorptive separation chamber through the one transfer line along with residual fluid in the one transfer line;
directing the extract stream including at least a portion of the residual fluid withdrawn through the transfer line to one destination; and
directing the extract stream withdrawn through the transfer line to another destination.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The process of claim 13, wherein an initial predetermined volume of the extract stream, including the portion of the residual fluid, withdrawn through the transfer line is directed to the one destination and a subsequent predetermined volume of the extract stream withdrawn through the transfer line is directed to the other destination.

### Claim 15 (depends on 13)

### Claim 16 (depends on 13)

The process of claim 13, further comprising monitoring a composition of the extract stream and directing the extract stream, including the portion of residual fluid, to the one destination when the composition has above a predetermined level of a component of the residual fluid and directing the extract stream to the other destination when the composition has below the predetermined level of the component.

### Claim 17 (depends on 13)

The process of claim 13, wherein the first destination is a recycle line for recycling the extract stream, including the portion of residual fluid, to the adsorptive separation chamber.

### Claim 18 (depends on 13)
