## Abstract

The present invention is directed to an industrial high-speed door assembly having a reduced door panel width and having guides for guiding the door which extend into a passageway but are resilient, tough, or resiliently collapsible, to either withstand impacts from vehicle collisions or moveable during opening of the door to avoid collisions while returning for guidance upon closing the door.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A high speed door having a door panel reduced in width to better fit between the opposite sides of an opening in a wall to which a door assembly is mounted to facilitate enhanced manual, and more preferably automated self-repair of the door panel when it is dislodged from its vertical guides by an impact to the door panel.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The high speed door of claim 1 wherein at least one of the guides for assisting vertical movement of the door panel are sized and configured to extend into a passageway generally defined by the opening and are constructed of a resilient and/or tough material such that the guide portions can withstand a collision with a freight-hauling vehicle and return resiliently or mechanically substantially to their pre-contact position for guiding.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The high speed door of claim 1 wherein at least one of the guides for assisting vertical movement of the door panel are sized and configured to extend into a passageway generally defined by the opening and are constructed in a way which allows at least one of the guides to collapse when hit and return afterwards for guiding by virtue of either its shape and configuration alone or shape, configuration, and material properties.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The high speed door of claim 1 wherein at least one of the guides for assisting vertical movement of the door panel are sized and configured to extend into a passageway generally defined by the opening and at least a vertically lower portion of same is constructed so that during initial opening of the door, the at least one guide is automatically moved outwardly away from the passageway to define a larger passageway during opening.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The high speed door of claim 1 wherein at least one of the guides for assisting vertical movement of the door panel are extends into a passageway generally defined by the opening when the door is closed or closing, and during initial movement of the door panel upwardly, a counterweight used to assist in raising the door panel, is configured to interact with a guide assembly to retract at least a lower portion of the at least one guide to prevent the guide from protruding into the passageway during the remainder of the door opening and a portion of is closing.

### Claim 6

A high-speed door assembly comprising:
a door panel including a width substantially equal to or less than the width of the opening;
a collapsible first guide operatively mounted proximate the opening and having opposed surfaces extending into the opening;
a collapsible second guide operatively mounted proximate the opening and having opposed surfaces extending into the opening, wherein a portion of the door panel is guided between the opposed surfaces of the collapsible first and second guides during normal opening and closing of the door panel; and,
a controller including a plurality of operating modes and coupled to the motor, wherein the controller changes its operating mode in response to displacement of the door panel from its normal operative path of travel.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The high-speed door assembly of claim 6 having the first and second guides respectively mounted to the opposed sides within the opening.

### Claim 8 (depends on 6)

The high-speed door assembly of claim 6 wherein one of the plurality of operating modes of the controller includes a normal operative mode capable of moving the door panel at a rate of speed of at least 48 inches/second.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The high-speed door assembly of claim 8 wherein the normal operative mode is capable of moving the door panel at a rate of speed of at least 80 inches/second.

### Claim 10 (depends on 6)

The high-speed door assembly of claim 6 further comprising a sensor coupled to the controller, the sensor being capable of detecting displacement of the door panel from its normal operative path of travel, wherein the controller being responsive to the sensor such that detection of the displaced door panel results in the controller changing its operating mode.

### Claim 11

A high-speed door assembly capable of vertically moving a door panel to permit and prohibit access through an opening having a width defined by opposed sides, the high-speed door assembly being adapted for displacement of its door panel from its normal operative path of travel upon receiving an atypical dislodging force, the high-speed door assembly comprising:
a first guide operatively mounted proximate the opening and having opposed surfaces between which a portion of the door panel is guided during normal opening and closing and wherein at least a portion of the opposed surfaces extends into the opening; and,
a second guide operatively mounted proximate the opening and having opposed surfaces between which a portion of the door panel is guided during opening and closing and wherein at least a portion of the opposed surfaces extends into the width of the opening; and,
further wherein the second guide being spaced apart from and aligned with the first guide to define a path of travel for the door panel such that a portion of the door panel is guided within the first and second guides.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The high-speed door assembly of claim 11 further comprising:
a portion of either the first or second guide being flexible so as to retract from the opening upon impact thereto and being capable of returning to substantially operative configuration.

### Claim 13 (depends on 11)

The high-speed door assembly of claim 11 further comprising:
at least one of the opposed surfaces of the first guide including a realignment ramp attached thereto proximate the top of the opening, the realignment ramp projecting upward and at an angle away from the path of travel for the door panel so as to facilitate operative realignment of the door panel to its normal path of travel subsequent to displacement of the door panel there from.

### Claim 14 (depends on 11)
