Abstract
A hot-runner system having a manifold and a nozzle, wherein the manifold or nozzle or both may be multi-material apparatuses of unitary construction. The nozzle may be thermally graded for temperature transmission between a heating sleeve and the melt. The nozzle may also include a melt flow channel apparatus that alters the flow of the melt before entering the mold. The nozzle and manifold may have a unitary construction that reduces fitting problems between the two apparatuses.
Claims20
An injection molding assembly for transferring a melt to a mold, comprising:
- a manifold having a manifold melt channel;
- a nozzle having a nozzle melt channel, said nozzle mounted to said manifold such that said manifold melt channel and said nozzle melt channel are in fluid communication with one another, and wherein said nozzle includes:
- a first nozzle portion made from a first material;
- and
- a second nozzle portion made from a second material different from said first material,
- wherein said first nozzle portion and said second nozzle portion are integrally fused together to form a unitary structure.
An injection molding apparatus for delivering melt from a manifold, comprising:
- a nozzle integrally formed with the manifold, said nozzle having a melt flow channel;
- and
- a melt flow channel device integrally formed on an interior surface of said nozzle so as to alter the flow within said melt flow channel.
An injection molding assembly according to claim 12, wherein said nozzle has an inner portion and an outer portion, said outer portion surrounding said inner portion, and wherein said outer portion has a greater thermal conductance than said inner portion.
A method for delivering melt to a mold, comprising:
- providing a first melt at a first-operational temperature from a first melt source through a first melt channel in a manifold,
- providing a second melt at a second-operational temperature from a second melt source through a second melt channel in the manifold,
- maintaining the temperature of the first melt and the second melt at their respective operational temperatures by, in part, thermally isolating the first melt channel from the second melt channel;
- and
- combining the first melt and the second melt in a nozzle.
