A method of operating a plant breeding program, the method comprising;
- a) sampling unpollinated maternal reproductive tissue from one or more possible plant breeding candidates;
- b) measuring yield metabolite levels in the tissue of a);
- c) comparing yield metabolites levels measured in b) against a calibration curve wherein the calibration curve correlates yield with yield metabolite levels measured in unpollinated maternal reproductive tissue;
- d) predicting the yield of said one or more plant breeding candidates;
- e) selecting plant breeding partners based on the prediction in d);
- f) breeding one or more plants of e) with another plant;
- and
- g) generate plant lines with higher yield.
A method of forecasting crop yields, the method comprising;
- a) sampling un-pollinated female inflorescence tissue from a subset of plants of a plant population;
- b) measuring one or more yield metabolite markers for each tissue sampled from the subset plant population of a);
- c) comparing yield metabolite marker levels measured in b) against a calibration curve wherein the calibration curve correlates grain yield with yield metabolite marker levels measured in un-pollinated female inflorescence tissue;
- and
- d) forecasting crop yields.
A method of determining the amount of fertilizer applied to an agricultural land;
- the method comprising;
- a) sampling unpollinated maternal reproductive tissue from 1 or more plants selected from a population of like plants being grown on a agricultural land;
- b) measuring glutamine levels in the tissue of a);
- c) comparing yield metabolite levels measured in b) against a calibration curve wherein the calibration curve correlates yield with yield metabolites levels measured in unpollinated maternal reproductive tissue;
- and
- d) predicting total yield of the population of like plants being grown on said agricultural land.
- e) determining the amount of fertilizer to be applied from the predicted yield of d).
A method of determining amount of chemistry to be applied to an agricultural land in order to maximize yield;
- the method comprising;
- a) sampling unpollinated maternal reproductive tissue from 1 or more plants selected from a population of like plants being grown on a agricultural land;
- b) measuring yield metabolite levels in the tissue of a);
- c) comparing yield metabolite levels measured in b) against a calibration curve wherein the calibration curve correlates yield with glutamine levels measured in unpollinated maternal reproductive tissue;
- and
- d) predicting total yield of the population of like plants being grown on said agricultural land.
- e) determining the amount of chemistry to be applied in order to maximize yield from the predicted yield of d).
A method for calculating a rate for a crop insurance policy, the method comprising:
- a) growing a crop and predicting yield of a crop by sampling unpollinated maternal reproductive tissue from 1 or more plants of said crop, measuring yield metabolite levels of the sampled unpollinated maternal reproductive tissue, comparing yield metabolite levels measured against a calibration curve wherein the calibration curve correlates yield with yield metabolite levels measured in unpollinated maternal reproductive tissue and predicting yield of said crop;
- and
- b) calculating the rate of a crop insurance policy based on the predicted yield of a).
A method of predicting commercial agricultural costs associated with growing, harvesting and transportation of grain, the method comprising:
- a) growing a crop;
- b) predicting yield of a crop by sampling unpollinated maternal reproductive tissue from 1 or more plants of said crop, measuring yield metabolite levels of the sampled unpollinated maternal reproductive tissue, comparing yield metabolite levels measured against a calibration curve wherein the calibration curve correlates yield with yield metabolite levels measured in unpollinated maternal reproductive tissue and predicting yield of said crop;
- and
- c) from the yield prediction of b) predict commercial agricultural costs.
