Abstract
Methods and apparatus to protect and audit communication line status are disclosed. An example method includes receiving a set of available communication lines from a media gateway, associating a plurality of destination numbers with respective ones of the available communication lines, and dialing the plurality of destination numbers from the media gateway to identify the communication line status information.

A method to conditionally block a destination number, comprising:
- dialing the destination number via a media gateway;
- identifying a designated operation mode of the destination number as one of fax-only or voice-only;
- blocking the destination number when negotiation tones are detected and the destination number is designated as voice only;
- and
- blocking the destination number when negotiation tones are absent and the destination number is designated as fax-only.

An apparatus to conditionally block a destination number, comprising:
- a media gateway to dial the destination number;
- a communication line query engine to:
- identify a designated operation mode of the destination number as one of fax-only or voice-only;

- block the destination number when negotiation tones are absent and the destination number is designated as fax only.

A tangible machine readable storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed, cause a machine to perform a method comprising:
- identifying a designated operation mode of a dialed destination number as one of fax-only or voice-only, the destination number dialed via a media gateway;

- and
- blocking the destination number when negotiation tones are absent and the destination number is designated as fax-only.
