Abstract
A modular plastic floor tile has a body of a first polymer compound and features overmolded onto the body from a second polymer compound. The compounds may be different from each other in hardness and/or color. The features may include raised pads on the upper surface. The pads on the upper surface may be injection-molded from the lower surface through through-holes. Crush rings on the upper surface of the floor tile, around the perimeter of the pads, provide a tight overmold shutoff and will substantially prevent flashing of the second polymer compound.
Claims9
A modular floor tile for use in creating a flooring surface comprising a plurality of such tiles, the floor tile comprising:
- a body molded of a first polymer compound, the body including a substantially planar, horizontal web having a lower surface and an upper surface including a general upper surface;
- a plurality of raised pads disposed on the upper surface of the horizontal web, the pads overmolded to extend upwardly from said general upper surface and molded from a second polymer compound which is different from the first polymer compound;
- each of the raised pads having a periphery, a circumferential crush ring formed on the upper surface of the horizontal web to adjoin the periphery and to extend laterally therearound, the crush ring having a smooth surface which is elevated with respect to the general upper surface of the horizontal web, such that when the raised pads are overmolded onto the upper surface of the horizontal web, the crush rings will provide a tight overmold shutoff and will substantially prevent the second polymer compound from flashing.
