Methods of treating neuronal disorders, such as mechanical neuronal traumas and neurodegenerative disorders, with TWEAK or a TWEAK receptor blocking agents are presented.

A method of treating a subject who has or is at risk for Parkinson's Disease comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of an agent that blocks TWEAK/TWEAK-R interaction or activity, wherein the agent comprises a TWEAK antagonist selected from:
- (a) an anti-TWEAK antibody or antigen binding fragment thereof;
- (b) an anti-TWEAK receptor antibody or antigen binding fragment thereof;
- or (c) a soluble TWEAK receptor.
