Abstract
A braking apparatus is described which is used to control the motion of a sliding platform of a pickup truck in order that the sliding platform may be stopped anywhere along its travel for convenience. The sliding platform is used to load and unload freight from the pickup truck when in an extended position at the rear of the truck. When the truck is parked on ground which is uneven the sliding platform is provided with energy which must be dissipated when it is moved from one position to another. When the usual braking device is released (usually a pin located appropriately in the tracks of the platform members) the sliding platform is in a “runaway” condition. The brake described here is capable of preventing this condition.
Claims6
A braking apparatus for a rolling or sliding platform mounted for rolling or sliding on a stationary platform member which is permanently mounted in the cargo space of a cargo carrying vehicle, so that the sliding platform is able to move out of the cargo space on said stationary platform of said vehicle and is capable of extending the length of said vehicle, and
- an elongated member is located between said members and mounted on one of the said members extends substantially the length said stationary member,
- said braking apparatus cooperating with said elongated member to apply a retarding force to said sliding platform upon actuation of said braking apparatus.
A brake for a sliding platform mounted on a stationary member which is permanently mounted in the cargo space of a suitable motor vehicle,
- said sliding platform being capable of moving back and forth in said cargo carrying space of said vehicle between a stowed position and an extended position suitable for unloading freight from said sliding platform,
- said stationary member having a suitable retarding rail mounted thereon and extending the length thereof,
- said rail having a predetermined spaced relationship with said brake mounted on said sliding member,
- said brake being capable of applying a retardation force to said sliding member to cause any motion of said sliding member to cease.
A sliding platform mounted on a stationary platform in the cargo space of a pickup truck, said platforms being of similar size and occupying the area of said cargo space,
- said sliding platform being confined to rectilinear motion along the length of said stationary platform to extend the length of said pickup truck,
- a brake manually operable for controlling the positioning of said sliding platform on said stationary platform,
- said brake having a rail of a predetermined shape extending longitudinally between said platforms.
