Abstract
The invention relates to a two-stage design for a water purification system, with water to be purified first passing through a first stage containing particulate filtration media, and a second stage containing a porous filtration block. The particulate filtration media can be the same as, or different from, material included in the porous block. Either material may be any material that removes contaminants from water by, e.g., absorption, adsorption, ion exchange, sequestration, or other mechanism, or any combination of these.

A water purification cartridge, comprising:
- (a) a first porous layer having an inner surface and an outer surface;
- (b) a porous purification block having an outer surface and an inner surface, and at least partially enclosed by the first porous layer;
- (c) a cavity between the inner surface of the first porous layer and the outer surface of the porous purification block and in fluid communication with the porous purification block;
- (d) one or more particulate purification media disposed within the cavity having a BET specific surface area ranging from about 1200 m2/g to about 1800 m2/g;
- and
- wherein the first porous layer is sufficiently porous to allow water to flow through it between its outer and inner surface, but not sufficiently porous to allow significant quantities of particulate or fibrous purification media to pass through the porous layer.
A water purification cartridge, comprising:
- (a) a first porous layer having an inner surface and an outer surface;
- (b) a porous purification block having an outer surface and an inner surface, and at least partially enclosed by the first porous layer;
- (c) a cavity between the inner surface of the first porous layer and the outer surface of the porous purification block and in fluid communication with the porous purification block;
- (d) one or more particulate purification media disposed within the cavity having particles with a BJH cumulative pore volume ranging from about 0.133 cm3/g to about 0.622 cm3/g;
- and
- wherein the first porous layer is sufficiently porous to allow water to flow through it between its outer and inner surface, but not sufficiently porous to allow significant quantities of particulate or fibrous purification media to pass through the porous layer.
