Abstract
A hybrid reclosable fastener with both mechanical mating and adhesive reclosable mating elements and a method of forming the hybrid reclosable fastener is described herein. Mechanical mating elements include mating portions having cooperating coupling parts configured to provide mechanical mating along with adhesive mating elements including an adhesive material formed on the cooperating coupling parts configured to provide an adhesive mating.
Claims37
A combined mechanical mating and adhesive-based reclosable fastener comprising:
- opposing substrate portions for supporting the reclosable fastener;
- mechanically mating elements of the reclosable fastener including mating portions having cooperating coupling parts configured to provide mechanical mating of the fastener when the cooperating coupling parts are coupled together;
- adhesive mating elements of the mating portions including contacting portions of the cooperating coupling parts formed of an adhesive material exhibiting a bond between the contacting portions configured to provide an adhesive mating of the cooperating coupling parts when coupled together;
- and
- the mechanically mating elements and the adhesive mating elements combine to provide a first peel force between the opposing substrate portions of about 80 to about 900 gpli and up to five subsequent peels between the opposing substrate portions of about 60 to about 900 gpli.
A method of forming a mechanical mating and adhesive-based fastener, the method comprising:
- applying an energy curable adhesive to a substrate;
- contacting the energy curable adhesive when applied to the substrate with a flexible and transparent mold defining a mold cavity therein, the mold cavity having undercut portions thereof, in a manner effective so that the energy curable adhesive fills the mold cavity;
- curing the adhesive by application of ultraviolet radiation or electron beam energy through the transparent mold while the adhesive is contacting the flexible and transparent mold for a time effective to cure the energy curable adhesive;
- and
- releasing the cured adhesive from the mold by resiliently flexing the undercut portions to allow the cured adhesive to release from the mold to form one portion of a combined mechanical mating and adhesive-based fastener configured to mate mechanically and adhesively to another portion of the combined mechanical mating and adhesive-based fastener where both portions together define mating portions including cooperating coupling parts formed in the mold and configured to provide mechanical mating of the cooperating coupling parts when coupled together;
- wherein contacting portions of the cooperating coupling parts formed in the mold of a cohesive material exhibiting a tack effective to form an adhesive bond between the contacting portions configured to provide an adhesive mating of the cooperating coupling parts when coupled together.
A combined mechanical mating and adhesive-based reclosable fastener comprising:
- opposing substrate portions for supporting the reclosable fastener;
- mechanically mating elements of the reclosable fastener including mating portions having cooperating coupling parts configured to provide mechanical mating of the cooperating coupling parts when coupled together;
- adhesive mating elements including contacting portions of the cooperating coupling parts formed of a cohesive material exhibiting a tack effective to form an adhesive bond between the contacting portions configured to provide an adhesive mating of the cooperating coupling parts when coupled together;
- and
- the mechanically mating elements and the adhesive mating elements effective to form a bond strength of the energy-cured patterned material to the polymeric base at least about 900 grams per linear inch and to permit a peel force upon reclosing of about 60 to about 900 gpli after contact of the reclosable fastener with particles having an average particle size less than about 150 microns.
A method of forming a mechanical mating and adhesive-based fastener, the method comprising:
- applying a liquid curable adhesive to a roll-mold having defined vented cavities therein in a manner to fill the vented cavities with the liquid curable adhesive;
- removing from the roll-mold any excess liquid curable adhesive not within the vented cavities;
- contacting the roll-mold with the liquid curable adhesive filled vented cavities with a substrate;
- curing the liquid curable adhesive by irradiating with an ultraviolet or an electron beam energy source through the back side of the substrate while the liquid curable adhesive remains in the vented cavities to form a cured fastener element attached to the substrate;
- removing the substrate from the roll-mold and extracting the cured fastener elements from vented cavities of the roll-mold to provide a substrate having the cured fastener elements therein;
- and
- using the substrate, with the cured fastener elements thereon, as a reclosable fastener of a package.
