Abstract
Free branching poinsettia plants are provided which comprise a heritable lateral branching trait. In certain aspects, poinsettia plants comprising a lateral branching trait are not pinched, are not grafted and/or are free of phytoplasma infection. Methods for growth and breeding such free branching poinsettias are also provided.
Claims27
A free branching poinsettia plant comprising it lateral branching trait wherein the plant is free of phytoplasma infection and any other branching agent.

A method of producing a free branching poinsettia plant comprising a lateral branching trait which confers to the plant a plurality of lateral branches which branching trait is combined with at least one horticultural elite trait in the resulting plant and is expressed therein, wherein the plant is free of phytoplasma infection and any other branching agent, which method comprises
- (a) identifying a first parent plant, in a poinsettia population having at the time of terminating growth of the main stem at least a first lateral branch that extends from the main stem of the plant,
- (b) crossing said parent plant with a second parent poinsettia plant which does not display any lateral branching and expresses said at least one horticultural elite trait,
- (c) selecting a progeny plant from the crossing in step (b) which displays increased branching and larger branches compared to said first parent plant,
- (d) crossing said progeny plant from step (c) with another poinsettia plant which displays at least one lateral branch,
- (e) repeating at least once step (c) and (d) by selecting each time a progeny plant for step (c) which displays increased branching and larger branches compared to the parent plant of the previous crossing step.

A poinsettia plant which can produce progeny plants comprising a lateral branching trait when said plant is crossed with a second poinsettia plant.
35-36. (canceled)
A poinsettia plant, which is the result of a cross between a first poinsettia plant comprising a lateral branching trait wherein the plant is free of phytoplasma infection and any other branching agent and a second poinsettia plant which expresses at least one horticultural elite traits.
