Media content recommendations based on social network relationship

A recommendation server comprising:

• a network interface device configured to communicate with a plurality of media content processing devices;
• a data aggregator in communication with the network interface device and configured to collect viewing data and social network information from each of the plurality of media content processing devices;
• and
• an analysis module in communication with the data aggregator and the network interface device, wherein the analysis module is configured to analyze the viewing data and the social network information and output a viewing recommendation to at least one of the plurality of media content processing devices based at least in part on social network relationships defined by the social network information.

A media content processing device comprising:

• a network interface device configured to communicate over a communication network;
• a social network application in communication with the network interface device and configured to retrieve social network information from a social network source over the communication network;
• a user input receiver in communication with the network interface device and configured to receive user input commands and transmit the received user input commands to a recommendation server over the communication network;
• and
• a recommendation application in communication with the network device and configured to receive a viewing recommendation from the recommendation server, wherein the viewing recommendation is based at least in part on the social network information.

A method comprising:

• collecting viewing data from a plurality of media content processing devices, including a target device and a source device;
• receiving social media information from a social network source, wherein the social network information defines a social network relationship between the target device and the source device;
• and
• generating a viewing recommendation for the target device based at least in part on the viewing data of the source device and the social network information.
