An anode active material comprising a core,
- wherein the core comprises:
- a crystalline carbon-based material having a lattice spacing d002 of about 0.35 nm or more;
- and
- titanium-based oxide particles.

A method of preparing an anode active material, the method comprising:
- preparing a crystalline carbon-based material having a lattice spacing d002 of about 0.35 nm or more;
- and
- preparing a core including the crystalline carbon-based material and titanium-based oxide particles.
