Liquid crystal display device

A liquid crystal display device comprising:

• a first substrate;
• a second substrate disposed in facing relation to the first substrate;
• a liquid crystal material disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate;
• a plurality of columnar spacers and a first alignment film disposed over the first substrate;
• an insulation film disposed over the second substrate;
• and a second alignment film disposed over the insulation layer;
• the liquid crystal display device further comprising:
• receiving pedestals for the columnar spacers, the receiving pedestals being disposed between the insulation layer and the liquid crystal material at positions where the receiving pedestals face the columnar spacers, the receiving materials each being formed of a material different from those for the insulation layer and the second alignment film, wherein:
• the second alignment film is not formed over the central portion of each of the receiving pedestals;
• and
• around the outer peripheral portion of each receiving pedestal, the second alignment film has an inclined thickness distribution which is such that the thickness thereof increases gradually from the central portion to the outside position of the receiving pedestal.
