Phase difference element and display device

A display device comprising:

• a display panel being driven according to an image signal;
• a backlight unit irradiating the display panel;
• and
• a phase difference element provided on a side opposite to the backlight unit with respect to the display panel,
• wherein the phase difference element includes:
• a base film having optical anisotropy, and
• a phase difference layer having optical anisotropy formed on the base film,
• wherein the phase difference layer has at least two kinds of phase difference regions with slow axes having different directions from each other,
• the at least two kinds of the phase difference regions are adjacently arranged in an in-plane direction of the base film,
• wherein the display panel has a first polarizer in a face on the phase different element side, and a second polarizer in a face opposite to the phase different element, and a slow axis of the base film faces in a direction parallel or vertical to a transmission axis of the first polarizer.
