Method and apparatus for identifying installed software and regulating access to content

A client device for controlling use of content in accordance with usage rights associated with the content, the client device comprising:

• one or more processors;
• and
• one or more memories operatively coupled to the one or more processors and having instructions stored thereon that, when executed by at least one of the one or more processors, cause the client device to:
• transmit a request for secure content to a server, the client device including a rendering application stored in at least one of the one or more memories, the rendering application being capable of rendering content;
• verify the integrity of the environment of the client device, including the integrity of the rendering application;
• retrieve the appropriate usage rights based upon the results of the verification of integrity;
• and
• render, with the rendering application, at least a portion of the content in accordance with the appropriate usage rights.

A computer-implemented method executed by one or more client-side computing devices for controlling use of content in accordance with usage rights associated with the content, the method comprising:

• transmitting, by at least one of the one or more client-side computing devices, a request for secure content to a server, at least one of the one or more client-side computing devices including a rendering application, the rendering application being capable of rendering content;
• verifying, by at least one of the one or more client-side computing devices, the integrity of the environment of at least one of the one or more client-side computing devices, including the integrity of the rendering application;
• retrieving, by at least one of the one or more client-side computing devices, the appropriate usage rights based upon the results of the verification of integrity;
• and
• rendering, with the rendering application, at least a portion of the content in accordance with the appropriate usage rights.

A server device for distributing content that is used of content in accordance with usage rights associated with the content, the server device comprising:

• one or more processors;
• and
• one or more memories operatively coupled to the one or more processors and having instructions stored thereon that, when executed by at least one of the one or more processors, causes the server device to:
• receive a request for secure content from a client device, the client device including a rendering application, the rendering application being capable of rendering content;
• receive verification of the integrity of the environment of the client device, including the integrity of the rendering application;
• and
• make the appropriate usage rights available to the client device based upon the results of the verification of integrity to permit the rendering application to render at least a portion of the content in accordance with the appropriate usage rights.

A computer-implemented method executed by one or more server-side computing devices for distributing content that is used of content in accordance with usage rights associated with the content, the method comprising:

• receiving, by at least one of the one or more server-side computing devices, a request for secure content from a client device, the client device including a rendering application, the rendering application being capable of rendering content;
• receiving, by at least one of the one or more server-side computing devices, verification of the integrity of the environment of the client device, including the integrity of the rendering application;
• and
• making, by at least one of the one or more server-side computing devices, the appropriate usage rights available to the client device based upon the results of the verification of integrity to permit the rendering application to render at least a portion of the content in accordance with the appropriate usage rights.
