Abstract
In some examples, the disclosure relates to a systems, devices, and techniques for delivering electrical stimulation therapy to a patient. In some example, the disclosure relates to systems and methods of treating hyperglycemia in a patient including delivering gastric electrical stimulation (GES) to the patient. Devices, systems and methods according to the disclosure may comprise an implantable stimulator, a blood glucose monitor and/or a food intake sensor. In some examples, a blood glucose level and/or food intake of a patient is detected and GES is delivered to the patient in response to the detection.
Claims31
A method of treating hyperglycemia in a patient comprising:
- measuring a blood glucose level of the patient;
- determining whether the blood glucose level exceeds a predetermined threshold and if the blood glucose level exceeds the predetermined threshold,
- delivering gastric electrical stimulation (GES) to a gastrointestinal tract (GI) of the patient.
A method of treating postprandial hyperglycemia of a patient comprising:
- detecting the onset of consumption of food by the patient;
- delivering gastric electrical stimulation (GES) to the patient in response to the detection;
- wherein detecting the onset of consumption of food comprises detecting an event from the group consisting of:
- contractile activity of the stomach, a change in the time of day, a change in a volume of the stomach, and a change in an electrical impedance between at least two electrodes located adjacent the stomach.
A method of treating postprandial hyperglycemia of a patient comprising:
- measuring a stomach content of the patient comprising detecting the presence of food in the stomach of the patient;
- delivering gastric electrical stimulation (GES) to the patient in response to the detection;
- and
- turning on a stimulation timer.
A method of managing a blood glucose level of a patient comprising:
- delivering gastric electrical stimulation (GES) to a gastrointestinal tract (GI) of the patient;
- wherein the GES comprises a signal comprising an alternating monophasic waveform.
A system for managing a blood glucose level of a patient comprising:
- a blood glucose monitor configured to measure the blood glucose level;
- an implantable stimulator configured to deliver gastric electrical stimulation (GES) to a gastrointestinal tract (GI) of the patient;
- wherein the implantable stimulator is configured to generate and deliver the GES when the blood glucose level exceeds a predetermined threshold.
A system for managing a blood glucose level of a patient comprising:
- a food intake sensor;
- an implantable stimulator configured to deliver gastric electrical stimulation (GES) to a gastrointestinal tract (GI) of the patient;
- wherein the implantable stimulator is configured to generate and deliver the GES when the food intake sensor senses ingestion of food by the patient.
