A method of inhibiting the elaboration of steroidogenesis inducing protein (SIP) from a cell in a subject, comprising blocking the interaction of the cell with extracellular SIP, comprising contacting the extracellular SIP with an agent that binds to the extracellular SIP at a site of contact between the extracellular SIP and a cell membrane-bound receptor, thereby inhibiting interaction between the extracellular SIP with the receptor and inhibiting elaboration of SIP from the cell of the subject.
A method of inhibiting the proliferation of a cancer cell, comprising blocking the interaction of the cell with extracellular SIP, comprising contacting the extracellular SIP with an agent that binds to the extracellular SIP at a site of contact between the extracellular SIP and a cell membrane-bound receptor, thereby inhibiting interaction between the extracellular SIP with the receptor and inhibiting proliferation of the cell.
