Abstract
A card body for a portable data carrier, in particular a chip card or magnetic strip card, and a method for manufacturing a card body. The card body includes at least a coextruded foil having at least two areas with different material properties. By using coextruded foils a card body consisting of a plurality of alternating opaque and transmissive strips as well as a card body with a window can be formed in a simple fashion.

A card body, useful for making either or both a chip card and a magnetic strip card, comprising:
- at least two coextruded foils respectively having at least a surface area of high opacity and a surface area of low opacity,
- said foils being disposed above each other so that in at least an area of the card body, surface areas of lower opacity are disposed above each other and in an adjoining area a surface area of high opacity and a surface area of low opacity,
- said foils respectively having at least an opaque and a transmissive surface area, wherein the opacity of the opaque surface area of at least one foil is higher than the opacity of at least one other foil, so that the card body has a window area comprising superimposed transmissive surface areas, as well as outside the transmissive surface area having graduated opacity.
A card body, in particular for manufacturing at least one of a chip card and a magnetic strip card, comprising:
- at least a coextruded foil having at least a surface area with a first material property and at least a second surface area with a second material property, wherein the at least one coextruded foil is covered on both sides with opaque cover foils, so that the card body displays a clearly recognizable material structure at least on two lateral sides.
A method for manufacturing a card body for a portable data carrier, comprising the steps:
- coextruding at least two foils which are respectively formed of at least two different polymer materials and respectively have at least a surface area of higher opacity and a surface area of lower opacity;
- arranging said foils above each other so that the card body has a graduated opacity with opacity graduations which are formed by superimposing two strips of higher opacity or of one of lower and one of higher opacity or two surface areas of higher opacity,
- said foils respectively having at least an opaque and a transmissive surface area, with the opacity of the opaque surface areas of at least one foil being higher than the opacity of the opaque surface areas of at least one other foil, to thereby provide the card body with a window area formed by superimposing transmissive surface areas, and areas outside the transmissive surface areas with different opacities.
