Abstract
Methods and Apparatuses for processing data are described herein. In one aspect of the invention, an exemplary method receives data which may include an executable portion and a non-executable portion. The non-executable portion of the data may be presented to a user without rendering the executable portion. The non-executable portion of data presented may also include information regarding the executable portion (e.g., subject matter or source of the data). The executable portion of the data is rendered or executed only when a request from a user is specifically received. Other methods and apparatuses are also described.
Claims21
A method for presenting data, comprising:
- receiving, with a server, an email including data having an executable portion and a non-executable portion, the data, when fully rendered, presenting a first document page having content supported by the executable portion and a non-executable portion, wherein the content associated with the executable portion can only be rendered by the executable code embedded within the executable portion, wherein the executable portion when rendered transmits information regarding a recipient of the email to a sender of the email, wherein the information indicates that the recipient's email address is valid;
- parsing the email, wherein parsing includes searching the email for anything that would interact with a remote location and determining whether the email includes an executable portion, wherein an executable portion interacts with a sender of the email, and wherein an executable portion includes one or more parameters capable of encoding the identity of a recipient of the email;
- determining, from the parsing, the non-executable portion of the data without rendering the executable portion, such that the recipient's email address is not exposed to the sender of the email and the sender of the email cannot verify whether the recipient's email address is valid, the non-executable portion including information regarding the executable portion;
- generating a second document page having the content from the non-executable portion without the content associated with the executable portion, the second document page suitable for transmission to a user client;
- delivering the second document page, with the server, to a user client over a network such that when the second document page is presented to a user, the content associated with the non-executable portion is presented while content associated with the executable portion is not presented within the second document page and the user is the recipient of the email;
- and
- transmitting at least one of a rendering of the executable portion of the data or the executable portion in response to a request from the user in response to the presented second document page, wherein the second document page, when presented, includes one or more marks to indicate a presence, within the second document page relative to the content associated with the non-executable portion, where the content associated with the executable portion would have been positioned and presented if the executable portion had been rendered.
A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium containing executable instructions configured to cause a data processing system to perform operations, including:
- receiving, with a server, an email including data having an executable portion and a non-executable portion, the data, when fully rendered, presenting a first document page having content supported by the executable portion and a non-executable portion, wherein the content associated with the executable portion can only be rendered by the executable code embedded within the executable portion, wherein the executable portion when rendered transmits information regarding a recipient of the email to a sender of the email, wherein the information indicates that the recipient's email address is valid;
- parsing the email, wherein parsing includes searching the email for anything that would interact with a remote location and determining whether the email includes an executable portion, wherein an executable portion interacts with a sender of the email, and wherein an executable portion includes one or more parameters capable of encoding the identity of a recipient of the email;
- determining, from the parsing, the non-executable portion of the data without rendering the executable portion, such that the recipient's email address is not exposed to the sender of the email and the sender of the email cannot verify whether the recipient's email address is valid, the non-executable portion including information regarding the executable portion;
- generating a second document page having the content from the non-executable portion without the content associated with the executable portion, the second document page suitable for transmission to a user client;
- delivering the second document page, with the server, to a user client over a network such that when the second document page is presented to a user, the content associated with the non-executable portion is presented while content associated with the executable portion is not presented within the second document page and the user is the recipient of the email;
- and
- transmitting at least one of a rendering of the executable portion of the data or the executable portion in response to a request from the user in response to the presented second document page, wherein the second document page, when presented, includes one or more marks to indicate a presence, within the second document page relative to the content associated with the non-executable portion, where the content associated with the executable portion would have been positioned and presented if the executable portion had been rendered.
A data processing system, comprising:
- a means for receiving, with a server, an email including data having an executable portion and a non-executable portion, the data, when fully rendered, presenting a first document page having content supported by the executable portion and a non-executable portion, wherein the content associated with the executable portion can only be rendered by the executable code embedded within the executable portion, wherein the executable portion when rendered transmits information regarding a recipient of the email to a sender of the email, wherein the information indicates that the recipient's email address is valid;
- a means for parsing the email, wherein parsing includes searching the email for anything that would interact with a remote location and determining whether the email includes an executable portion, wherein an executable portion interacts with a sender of the email, and wherein an executable portion includes one or more parameters capable of encoding the identity of a recipient of the email;
- a means for determining, from the parsing, the non-executable portion of the data without rendering the executable portion, such that the recipient's email address is not exposed to the sender of the email and the sender of the email cannot verify whether the recipient's email address is valid, the non-executable portion including information regarding the executable portion;
- a means for generating a second document page having the content from the non-executable portion without the content associated with the executable portion, the second document page suitable for transmission to a user client;
- a means for delivering the second document page, with the server, to a user client over a network such that when the second document page is presented to a user, the content associated with the non-executable portion is presented while content associated with the executable portion is not presented within the second document page and the user is the recipient of the email;
- and
- a means for transmitting at least one of a rendering of the executable portion of the data or the executable portion in response to a request from the user in response to the presented second document page, wherein the second document page, when presented, includes one or more marks to indicate a presence, within the second document page relative to the content associated with the non-executable portion, where the content associated with the executable portion would have been positioned and presented if the executable portion had been rendered.
