Abstract
A method and system for automatic backup of desktop items is described.

A method, implemented by a computing system programmed to perform the following, comprising:
- collecting time-based information about a plurality of data objects stored in a local data store of the computing system;
- creating a desktop view of a plurality of desktop items from the plurality of data objects;
- determining whether to back up one or more of the plurality of desktop items using the time-based information of the plurality of data objects;
- and
- based on said determining, automatically backing up the one or more of the plurality of desktop items in a remote data store of a second computing device coupled to the computing device over a network.

A computer readable storage medium including instructions that, when executed by a processing system, cause the processing system to perform a method comprising:
- collecting time-based information about a plurality of data objects stored in a local data store of the computing system;
- creating a desktop view of a plurality of desktop items from the plurality of data objects;
- determining whether to back up one or more of the plurality of desktop items using the time-based information of the plurality of data objects;
- and
- based on said determining, automatically backing up the one or more of the plurality of desktop items in a remote data store of a second computing device coupled to the computing device over a network.

- a network interface configured to be communicatively coupled to remote data storage over a network;
- local data storage to store a plurality of data objects and time-based information about the plurality of data objects;
- and
- a processing device coupled to the local data storage and the network interface, wherein the processing device is configured to execute a desktop manager to:
- collect the time-based information about the plurality of data objects;
- create a desktop view of a plurality of desktop items from the plurality of data objects;
- determine whether to back up one or more of the plurality of desktop items using the time-based information of the plurality of data objects;
- and
- based on said determination, automatically back up the one or more of the plurality of desktop items in the remote data storage over the network.
