A method of treating an autoimmune disorder, the method comprising the step of administering to an individual in need thereof a therapeutically effective amount of a RARα agonist, wherein administration of the RARα agonist reduces a symptom associated with the autoimmune disorder, thereby treating the individual, and wherein the RARα agonist is a compound having the structure of formula I

• wherein R1 is H or C1-6 alkyl;
• R2 and R3 are independently H or F;
• and
• R4 is a halogen.

A method of treating inflammation, the method comprising the step of administering to an individual in need thereof a therapeutically effective amount of a RARα agonist, wherein administration of the RARα agonist reduces a symptom associated with inflammation, thereby treating the individual, and wherein the RARα agonist is a compound having the structure of formula I

• wherein R1 is H or C1-6 alkyl;
• R2 and R3 are independently H or F;
• and
• R4 is a halogen.

A method of treating a transplant rejection, the method comprising the step of administering to an individual in need thereof a therapeutically effective amount of a RARα agonist, wherein administration of the RARα agonist reduces a symptom associated with the transplant rejection, thereby treating the individual, and wherein the RARα agonist is a compound having the structure of formula I

• wherein R1 is H or C1-6 alkyl;
• R2 and R3 are independently H or F;
• and
• R4 is a halogen.
