Abstract
Aspects of performing smooth backwards playback in a DVD system are described. The aspects include reconstructing frame data for every frame in a set of frames of an original playback, the set of frames preceding a currently displayed frame. Further included is the utilization of at least seven frame buffers to store frame data during the reconstructing step. The reconstructed frame data is then displayed in reverse order of the original playback for the set of frames.

A method of processing information, said method comprising:
- decoding video data comprising a plurality of B-frames, wherein said plurality of B-frames are consecutive frames, wherein said decoding said video data further comprises consecutively decoding said plurality of B-frames in reverse order, wherein said reverse order is opposite from a forward order in which said video data is encoded, and wherein said decoding further comprises decoding a P-frame contemporaneously with:
- a display of a first B-frame of said plurality of B-frames;
- and a release from memory of a second B-frame of said plurality of B-frames;
- and
- storing said decoded video data in at least one frame buffer, wherein said storing further comprises contemporaneously storing said plurality of B-frames in said at least one frame buffer.
A method of processing information, said method comprising:
- decoding video data comprising an I-frame and a plurality of B-frames, wherein said plurality of B-frames are consecutive frames, wherein said decoding said video data further comprises decoding a first B-frame of said plurality of B-frames and said I-frame in reverse order, wherein said decoding said video data further comprises consecutively decoding said plurality of B-frames in reverse order, wherein said reverse order is opposite from a forward order in which said video data is encoded, and wherein said decoding further comprises decoding a P-frame contemporaneously with:
- a display of said first B-frame;
- and a release from memory of a second B-frame of said plurality of B-frames;
- and
- storing said decoded video data in at least one frame buffer, wherein said storing further comprises contemporaneously storing said plurality of B-frames in said at least one frame buffer.
A system comprising:
- a processor;
- a decoding engine coupled to said processor and operable to decode video data, wherein said video data comprises a plurality of B-frames, wherein said plurality of B-frames are consecutive frames, wherein said decoding engine is further operable to consecutively decode said plurality of B-frames in reverse order, wherein said reverse order is opposite from a forward order in which said video data is encoded, and wherein said decoding further comprises decoding a P-frame contemporaneously with:
- a display of a first B-frame of said plurality of B-frames;
- and a release from memory of a second B-frame of said plurality of B-frames;
- and
- a memory coupled to said processor and operable to store said decoded video data, wherein said memory is further operable to contemporaneously store said plurality of B-frames.
