Mimo transmitter and method for transmitting ofdm symbols

A method of communicating in a wireless network, the method comprising:

• transmitting orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) symbols on four or more subchannels of a wireless communication channel, wherein the channel has a frequency spectrum comprising 5 GHz, and wherein each of the subchannels has a bandwidth of about 20 MHz;
• dividing the channel into a plurality of spatial streams using beamforming;
• and
• individually modulating subcarriers of each of the spatial streams in accordance with individual subcarrier modulation assignments.

A computer-readable medium having program instructions stored thereon to perform a method, which when executed within a wireless communication device, result in:

• transmitting orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) symbols on four or more subchannels of a wireless communication channel, wherein the channel has a frequency spectrum comprising 5 GHz, and wherein each of the subchannels has a bandwidth of about 20 MHz;
• dividing the channel into a plurality of spatial streams using beamforming;
• and
• individually modulating subcarriers of each of the spatial streams in accordance with individual subcarrier modulation assignments.

A multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) system including:

• a data processor;
• multiple antennas;
• and
• a transceiver having a transmitter portion, the transmitter portion being adapted to:
• transmit orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) symbols on four or more subchannels of a wireless communication channel, wherein the channel has a frequency spectrum comprising 5 GHz, and wherein each of the subchannels has a bandwidth of about 20 MHz;
• divide the channel into a plurality of spatial streams using beamforming;
• and
• individually modulate subcarriers of each of the spatial streams in accordance with individual subcarrier modulation assignments.
