Abstract
The invention provides a process for preparing 1-alkoxy-2-methyl-1-oxopropan-2-yl(meth)acrylate, e.g. 1-methoxy-2-methyl-1-oxopropan-2-yl(meth)acrylate, by transesterifying alkyl α-hydroxyisobutyrates. Copolymerization of such monomers in the preparation of poly(meth)acrylate-based moulding materials improves the heat distortion resistance thereof.

A process comprising:
- (a) copolymerizing at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of a monomer of formula (II) and a monomer of formula (III):
- with at least one other monomer, to obtain a first polymer;
- and
- (b) eliminating a compound of formula (V) then a substance (V) of the formula
- from the first polymer in a polymer-analogous manner by supplying heat, to obtain a second polymer comprising an acid group,
- wherein R1 is hydrogen or a methyl group, and R2 is an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms.
