Abstract
Fibrous calcium pyrophosphate particles with a unique fibrous nanostructure are disclosed. The invention includes a composition, comprising fibrous particles, wherein the fibrous particles include fibers and the fibers include calcium and pyrophosphate. Also included are methods for making calcium pyrophosphate particles wherein solutions of calcium salt and pyrophosphate salt are combined to form the particles. Pharmaceutical compositions and methods for treating a patent using the disclosed particles are also described.

Isolated spherical particles comprising amorphous calcium pyrophosphate, the particles having a diameter of at least about 1 μm.
Isolated porous spherical particles comprising calcium pyrophosphate, wherein the particles are substantially free of manganese and of β calcium pyrophosphate.
Isolated porous spherical particles comprising calcium pyrophosphate, wherein the particles are substantially free of β calcium pyrophosphate and have a diameter of at least about 10 μm.
Isolated substantially homogenous microscale assemblies comprising a nanoporous calcium pyrophosphate network, the microscale assemblies having a diameter of at least about 1 μm.
Isolated spherical particles comprising a substantially homogenous network of calcium pyrophosphate and a network of pores, the particles having a diameter of at least about 1 μm.
Isolated spherical particles comprising porous and homogeneous calcium pyrophosphate microscale assemblies, the particles comprising a major component other than β calcium pyrophosphate and having a diameter of at least about 1 μm.
Isolated spherical particles comprising calcium pyrophosphate, wherein the particles have a sponge-like morphology and a diameter of at least about 1 μm.
A tabletting excipient comprising calcium pyrophosphate microscale assemblies.
A method of making particles, the method comprising:
- a) mixing a solution of a calcium salt with a solution of a pyrophosphate salt, pyrophosphoric acid, or a combination thereof;
- b) allowing growth of said particles, and
- c) recovering the particles.
