Abstract
The present application relates to a topical formulation comprising ibuprofen, a hydroalcoholic based solvent system, a C1-4alcohol ester of citric acid, and a surfactant. The formulation shows physical stability over more than one month at ambient temperature and is colourless, essentially odorless, and has a pH value of about 6.5. The formulation of the application shows two to four times improved ibuprofen flux compared to a standard composition.

A method for treating pain comprising applying an effective amount of a composition comprising ibuprofen, a hydroalcoholic-based solvent, a C1-4 alcohol ester of citric acid and a surfactant, wherein the composition is formulated for topical administration, to a subject in need thereof.
