Method of detecting individuals at risk for atherosclerosis and related vascular diseases involving the detection of IL-1α autoantibodies, as well as therapeutic methods to prevent or treat atherosclerosis and related vascular disease by administering a pharmaceutical composition comprising IL-1α autantibodies.

A method of raising the serum titer of IL-1α autoantibodies in an individual previously determined to have a low serum titer of IL-1α autoantibodies, the method comprising the step of:
- administering to the individual a pharmaceutical composition which consists essentially of:
- antibodies that target IL-1α and a pharmaceutically acceptable vehicle.
