Abstract
This document provides methods and materials related to treating renal cell carcinoma. For example, methods and materials for assessing a cancer patient (e.g., a renal cell carcinoma patient) for tumor or peritumoral tissue containing CD14+ cells and proceeding with a cancer treatment option (e.g., a renal cell carcinoma treatment option) based on the presence, absence, or level of CD14+ cells present within the tumor or peritumoral tissue are provided.
Claims26
A method for treating a human having renal cell carcinoma, wherein said method comprises:
- (a) determining whether or not tumor or peritumoral tissue from said human contains greater than 30 percent of CD14+ cells, and
- (b) proceeding with a type B treatment if said tissue contains greater than 30 percent of CD14+ cells, and proceeding with a type A or type B treatment if said tissue does not contain greater than 30 percent of CD14+ cells.

A method for treating a human having glioblastoma multiforme, wherein said method comprises:
- (a) determining whether or not tumor or peritumoral tissue from said human contains greater than 10 percent of CD14+ cells, and
- (b) proceeding with a conventional glioblastoma multiforme therapy if said tissue does not contain greater than 10 percent of CD14+ cells, and proceeding with a therapy more aggressive than said conventional glioblastoma multiforme therapy if said tissue contains greater than 10 percent of CD14+ cells.
A method for identifying a potential treatment agent for reducing cancer aggressiveness, wherein said method comprises:
- (a) administering a test agent to a mammal having cancer, wherein tumor or peritumoral tissue of said cancer contains a detectable level of CD14+ cells, and
- (b) determining whether or not the level of CD14+ cells present in said tumor or peritumoral tissue of said cancer is reduced as compared to the level of CD14+ cells present in said tumor or peritumoral tissue of said cancer prior to said administering step (a),
- wherein a reduction in the level of CD14+ cells present in said tumor or peritumoral tissue of said cancer indicates that said test agent is said potential treatment agent for reducing cancer aggressiveness.
